A word from our Head Teacher

With gratitude & pride

S
"Ten years ago, a small group of Tamil families came together with one simple wish — to make sure our children could speak, read, and write in their mother tongue. What began in a community hall with a handful of students has grown into something truly special: a school, yes, but more importantly a family.

To every parent who trusted us with your child, every volunteer who gave their Sunday afternoons, every student who sat with a workbook and wrestled with a tricky grammar rule — this tenth anniversary belongs to all of you.

நம் மொழி, நம் பண்பாடு, நம் அடையாளம்.
Our language, our culture, our identity. May we carry it forward for another hundred years."
Mr. Sathees திரு. சதீஸ் Head Teacher & Co-Founder, Norwich Tamil School

Our story

The journey — 2016 to 2026

From a dream to a thriving school — every step of the way.

2016 — Founded
Norwich Tamil School is born
A group of Tamil families gather for the first time at a local community centre. Classes begin with 12 students, 3 volunteer teachers, and a shared dream of keeping Tamil alive for the next generation.
2017
First Tamil New Year celebration
The school hosts its first Tamil New Year event, drawing over 60 families from across Norfolk. Students perform songs and recite poems — a tradition that continues every year.
2018
Harford Community Centre — our home
The school moves to Harford Community Centre on Hall Road — a bigger, better space. Enrolment doubles to over 40 students. New classes added for Grades 5–7.
2019
Registered as a community organisation
Norwich Tamil School is formally registered as a not-for-profit community project, enabling grant applications and formalising its safeguarding and governance structures.
2020–21
Adapting through the pandemic
COVID-19 forces classes online. Teachers quickly adapt to Zoom lessons, ensuring no student misses out on learning. The Tamil community rallies together with mutual support.
2022
Return to class & 100 students milestone
In-person classes resume with full energy. The school crosses 100 enrolled students for the first time — a landmark moment celebrated with a special assembly.
2023
Cultural & arts workshops launched
Expanding cultural learning, the school introduces traditional drama, folk tales storytelling, and festive crafts workshops alongside the language curriculum.
2024
First students reach Grade 8 & GCSE prep
The original cohort from 2016 reach Grade 8 — a milestone that fills the whole school with pride. GCSE Tamil preparation sessions are introduced for the first time.
2025
New website & parent portal
The school launches a new website and digital parent portal, making it easier for families to enrol, track progress, and stay connected with school events.
19 April 2026 ✦
10th Anniversary Celebration 🎉
The school gathers to celebrate a decade of language, culture, and community. Students perform, alumni return, families share memories, and Norwich Tamil School looks proudly to the future.
